Unschooling: Trust, Autonomy, and The Realities of Learning

A Ladies Fixing the World conversation

The Ladies are Fixing the World again!

Cecilie, Sandra and I are discussing the words ‘self-regulation’ and ‘limits’.

When we say, “I’ve let go of control, and now I’m waiting for my child to learn how to regulate his time playing video games (for example),” do we have expectations about what that regulation should look like? Do we want self-regulation to match what we think is best? Do we need our kids’ choices to resemble ours? If they don’t, do we soon give up, saying, “Unschooling doesn’t work!”?

Would we like our children to impose time limits on activities that we don’t really value? Is imposing limits always about control? Or can limits be helpful? Does it depend on how we’re using that word?

Cecilie, Sandra and I dive into these questions, trying to get to the heart of what self-regulation and limits really mean in S2E2 of The Ladies Fixing the World podcast. We share ideas and stories, sometimes differ in our opinions, and thoroughly enjoy the lively conversation. We hope you’ll enjoy it too.
