Back in February, my author daughter Imogen joined me on my podcast to talk about unschooling and writing. In episode 148, Our Writing Unrules for Unschoolers, we explored the question:
Can unschoolers gain the writing skills they need without any formal instruction?
We shared our own stories, experiences, and thoughts as well as our writing unrules. (You can also find these in my unschooling book Curious Unschoolers.)
Imogen and I are passionate writers just like the other members of our family. If someone mentions the word ‘writing’, we always have a lot to say. So when we got to the end of our unschooling writing podcast, Imogen and I weren’t really finished. “Shall we do another writing episode?” I asked and Imogen’s eyes lit up as she said, “Oh yes!”
We intended to get together again within a week or two to continue the writing conversation, but that didn’t happen. Life got busy around here. It was difficult to find a time when both Imogen and I were free. So the months passed. Then yesterday, Imogen had a day off work and I didn’t have anything urgent that I had to do so I said, “Do you want to record a podcast with me?” Late morning, we met in my closet recording studio(!) and we continued talking about unschooling and writing.
In our first writing episode, Imogen and I talked mainly about young children and the beginning of the writing process. This time, we moved onto the next stage: how kids (and adults) can improve their writing.
We share some of our favourite writing communities. books, podcasts and events.
We also answered a couple of listener questions about writing.
In episode 153, Imogen and I also talk about:
- The Global Homeschooling Summit and share a taste of Imogen and Sophie’s interview.
- My soon-to-be-published unschooling book Radical Unschool Love.
- My daughter Charlotte’s new design project: her Red Bubble shops.
Talking of the Global Homeschooling Summit: it has begun! My interview is live. If you have a free ticket to this online event, you can find the video link in your notification email for day 2. This morning, I watched my video. Yes, I was brave enough to view it. Aren’t I getting good at putting myself into uncomfortable situations?! Imogen and Sophie’s interview will be published on Thursday, June 27.
But back to unschool writing, if you missed episode 148, Our Writing Unrules for Unschoolers, you could go back and listen to it before tuning into episode 153, More Unschool Writing Ideas and Resources.
