Are You Strange, Odd and Eccentric and Interested in Everything?

A few years ago, while I was in the middle of writing a very curious blog post, I suddenly decided to google the definition of curious.

I discovered this word means:

marked by a desire to investigate and learn

But it also means:

exciting attention as strange, novel, or unexpected

I decided to put curious in front of unschoolers.

And then I wondered:

Curious unschoolers: do these words describe my family? Are we strange? Are we interested in everything?

My family is strange. Yes, we’re definitely different. But is that because we’re unschoolers? Is unschooling making us weird? Or has unschooling given us the freedom to be ourselves, to be who we really are?

As well as strange, we are indeed curious people. We ask questions, dive down rabbit holes, ponder ideas, experiment, try things out. We want to know more!

Recently, I’ve been making some short vertical videos for social media. I wondered: can I post my videos here on my blog as well as on YouTube and Instagram? I wanted the videos to look like shorts or reels and not have any black space around them. I googled and read and experimented for hours and, eventually, I found a way. I was successful!

So, I’m now wondering: Are you and your family strange too? Perhaps you’re odd or eccentric? And do you all have a passion for learning? Are you interested in everything?

Are you curious unschoolers?

Because I’m very curious, I have a few more questions:

Is there something that you’re diving deep into at the moment? (I’m still trying to work out how to make an attractive gallery of my short videos.) And what do you think of social media? Is it better than blogging?

One last thing: Of course, my first unschooling book is called Curious Unschoolers!

  1. Hi Sue!
Thanks for all the interesting, ahem, I mean curious, posts 🙂
Our latest deep dive actually involves diving underwater. The kids and I ar swimming and learning to swim in the San Francisco Bay. The youngest kid fell in last year while playing on the beach, and then decided that’s where she wanted to learn to swim, and off we went.

    • Hi Hamilton!

You left a comment on my other curious post, the one I linked to in this post. I remember you suggesting I turn my list of things I say to encourage curiosity into a meme or maybe print them on a t shirt. I’ve been wondering if I can make a reel or a short out of them.

You are deep diving in more ways than one! Swimming and diving sounds like lots of fun. It’s wonderful when everyone can swim, isn’t it?

I always love hearing about your adventures with your family. So good to receive your comment!
